How to Find a Good Barber in San Antonio (Especially If You Just Moved Here)

By Jessica, founder of StyleMatchMe and owner of a San Antonio barbershop · Updated October 30, 2026

The short answer: look at photos of cuts like yours, check that the barber is licensed, and try one simple cut before you commit. Star ratings tell you about the shop. Photos tell you about the barber.

Why is it so hard to find a barber after a move?

Your old barber knew your head. You didn't have to explain your guard numbers, your cowlick, or how you like your lineup. In a new city, you're starting from zero, and San Antonio is a city where a lot of people are new, from military families at Joint Base San Antonio to people moving in for work.

The biggest issue I've seen in my almost 20 years doing men's hair is the client being listened to and the barber or stylist being honest about their abilities. Clients will never come back if they don't feel heard, and a barber just does whatever cut they know how to do, or nervously rushes through a cut they don't really know how to do.

How do you find the right barber?

  1. Know what you want. Save a photo of your best cut and know your guard numbers if you have them. "Low fade, a 2 on top, natural lineup" gets a better first cut than "clean it up."
  2. Look at the work, not just the stars. Check the shop's Instagram or the barber's own page for cuts on hair like yours. A shop can have great reviews and still have one barber who's the wrong fit for you.
  3. Check the license. Barbers in Texas must be licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). You can look anyone up with TDLR's license search, or just ask to see it.
  4. Match the shop to your life. Walk-ins or appointments only? Open evenings or Sundays? Online booking? Parking? The best barber in town doesn't help if you can never get in.
  5. Start with a simple cut. Bring your photo, and speak up early if something looks off. A good barber would rather adjust in the first five minutes than fix it at the end.

What should you ask a new barber?

  • Do you take walk-ins, or should I book?
  • How long does a cut like this usually take you?
  • How often should I come back to keep it looking right?
  • What's the price for a cut, and for a cut with a beard trim?

What are the red flags?

  • Clippers that don't get cleaned between clients. You should see tools cleaned every time.
  • No consultation at all before the clippers come out.
  • Prices that aren't clear until you're paying.
  • A rushed cut with an uneven fade or lineup.

What does a haircut cost in San Antonio?

“Men’s hair” isn’t one price. In San Antonio, the service matters more than the shop: a buzz cut, a skin fade, and a haircut with beard and hot towel can differ by $50 at the same barber. The south and west sides run cheapest, at $25–$40. Stone Oak and the 1604 north corridor run highest. A cluster of Stone Oak barbers price regular cuts at $50 and premium cuts at $55–$60. Some shops also charge new clients more, at $65 for a haircut and $75 with a beard.

Whether you go to a chain or locally owned shop, find out what the price is and if it's within your range. StyleMatchMe can help you find barbers that are at your price and within reach.

How much should you tip a barber?

Nowadays, the checkout process is streamlined, and a tip is automatically calculated at the end. These automated systems usually start around 15–18% and go up to 25%, but you should still only feel comfortable tipping what is appropriate for the service you received. There is no baseline tip amount in our industry, and it should be based on how well your experience went. I mean, it is your hair and means a lot more than a plate delivered to your table.
